Day 6 Synopsis: We jump ahead in our story from yesterday and focus on one of Isaac's sons, Jacob. Jacob was a crafty and sneaky fellow who stole from his older twin brother, Esau. He stole Esau's birthright and blessing as a firstborn son. Because Esau was angry at Jacob and because Isaac (his dad) didn't like the local women, Jacob left his homeland and family to be safe from Esau and to find a wife.
At this point in the story, Jacob is traveling away from home and he is all alone. He stops to sleep at night and uses a stone for a pillow. While sleeping that night he has a dream about a stairway/ladder that stretches to heaven. At the top of the ladder is God. God tells Jacob that He will be his God, the same way He was for Abraham (his grandfather) and Isaac (his father.) He promises to give him a special land and to have more numerous descenants than the dust of the earth. (Sound familiar?!?) Then God promises to be with Jacob wherever he went. He promised never to leave Jacob. Of all the promises, I think the best promise is that God would always be with Jacob. He chose to give this promise to Jacob at a time when Jacob probably felt alone having left everything he ever knew. This promise that God will never leave is true for us as Believers in Christ as well. And if God can use a sneaky ornery person like Jacob, He can surely use me too. As the story continues, we learn that Jesus is a descendant of Jacob. He would be the most important descendant that Jacob would ever have.
