Day 21 Synopsis: We are getting so close now! Here we learn the story of the birth of John the Baptist. He was born to a priest named Zechariah and his wife, Elizabeth. Elizabeth and Mary were related actually. What makes the birth of John amazing is that it is very similar to another birth we read about earlier. Like Sarah (Abraham's wife), Elizabeth was barren and was unable to have children and was well along in age.
However, one day Zechariah is in the Temple and an angel of the Lord (Gabriel) appears to him and tells him he and Elizabeth are going to have a baby boy. They are told to name him John. Their son was going to prepare the world for the coming of Jesus Christ. Zechariah couldn't believe what he was hearing and as a result of his lack of faith, he was unable to speak until baby John was born.
We jump ahead a little bit, but John grows up to be a great man and baptizes many people in preparation for the coming of the Great Rescuer, Jesus. Baptizing them represented that they had repented of their sins and asked God for forgiveness. That is how he got the name, John the Baptist. He lived in the wilderness and ate locusts and honey. He told everyone he met that someone greater was coming who would baptize them not with water like he was doing but with the Holy Spirit.
John and Jesus were born about the same time. He was born so that he could prepare the way for us to know Christ. John's job was to tell the world that our Savior was here and that Jesus was going to save us all!
