Day 19 Synopsis: More time passes and Israel has another king. This King, Zedekiah, does not follow after the Lord or listen to God's Prophet, Jeremiah. In fact, King Zedekiah and all of the people mock the prophets and anger God. The Lord eventually allows the king of Babylon, King Nebuchadnezzar, to kill a vast number of the Israelites and capture the people that are not massacred. Then Babylon took all of the treasures from the Temple of God and burned the palaces, walls of Jerusalem and the Temple of God. Everything was destroyed. As Jeremiah had warned the people, they would suffer slavery under Babylon and Persia for 70 years.
God is a God of love, but He also is a God of justice. And He will only tolerate sin for so long before He allows sinners to suffer the consequences of our bad decisions. Even though God allowed His Chosen People to suffer severely, He never stopped loving them. During this time, is when we learn about Daniel. (This is the famous Daniel and the lions' den.) We also hear of other stories of faithful men who choose to follow God.(Shadrach, Meshach & Abednego survive being thrown in a fiery furnace because they wouldn't bow down to anyone but God.) God did not forsake His people, and He had a great rescue plan. Christmas was going to come and Jesus was going to save the day!
