Day 14 Synopsis: As we continue our journey through the Old Testament, we learn that Israel decided they want a King. This is not the best idea that Israel has had, but they persist and God gives them what they ask. They end up with their first King, King Saul. Saul starts out following after the Lord, but he begins to become proud and falls away from God. In the meantime, God chooses another king for Israel in Saul's place.
Jesse (from yesterday) has several sons, and God tells Samuel (God's Prophet) to anoint the chosen son of Jesse to be King of Israel. In that day, a king needed to look strong and handsome. Jesse had several tall, strong and handsome sons. They all lined up and Samuel looked them over. However, God told Samuel that none of these men were to be the king. He asked Jesse if this was all of his sons. There was one more, the youngest who was out watching the sheep. Surely God wouldn't want the youngest son.... They called the youngest son to stand before Samuel. It was him! The smallest and youngest of Jesse's sons was to be King. His name was David. Samuel anointed David to be the King of Israel.
It wasn't for several years that David started to reign as king. He did many famous things while he waited for God's timing. (Does the story of David and Goliath sound familiar?) He was hated by Saul and had to hide from him. Finally, Saul died in battle and David became king of all Israel. God chose an unlikely person to be king that day that Samuel anointed him. God also chose an unlikely way to save the world. Through the birth of a tiny baby boy born on Christmas morning. He like David, would grow up and rule. David's time to reign is over, but Jesus will reign forever!
